Solar Powered Hot water heat?

Solar Powered Hot water heat?

I would like to power my hot water from solar power. I have the old base board hot water heated radiation heat in my home. How can i power 100% of my hot water heat bill by solar power alone? And what about tax credits?

I take it you are talking about hot water solar collectors? Solar water heaters come in many different flavors, flat panel collectors and evacuated tube collectors (picture in link below):

You could simply put an evacuated tube system outside of your home and use the thermosiphon principal to have the water circulate throughout the home, although you will probably have to get a small water pump and a small heat source for night time.

These evacuated tube system will get water over 200 F and even on a cloudy day because they harness infrared light.

You can then get a small solar panel to run the circulation pump and your all set.

Well you can but, if you want a system that will run 24/7 and if you have sun most of the days of the year. You can build a system that uses solar energy to break down water to hydrogen and oxygen. Then you store the hydrogen in tanks which are connected to a heater that burns the hydrogen to produce hot water. But I'm not liable for anything you do :P . This is a do-able suggestion. I've seen people use this method to run electric generators.

the answer depends on to many things. In the sunny parts of my state, the local solar water heating distributor calculated I'd need over to acres (90,000 square feet) of panels and about 1000 gallons of storage to completely shutdown my 98% efficient condensing boiler. the cost, for my 3000 sq ft house new solar water heater would have been about $250,000. with all state and federal rebates $150,000. My annual electric bill for circulating the water would increase by $500, but I'd save $2000 on fuel. The payout would be 100 years.

it is very easy to power your hot water heater with solar. In fact I built my own solar panel that heats my water and runs my fan unit for my swamp cooler. I got the plans online and it was easy –

You can run a solar heater before the hot water heater to cut costs.

it will be hard to keep the water at the right temp whenever you need it and solar panels cost allot
